Machine learning in biomedicine: from individuall cells to individual patients and back

A fundamental challenge in machine learning is distinguishing global structures underpinning all data points, and local structures private to subgroups of instances. A paradigmatic example is the ongoing effort towards precision medicine: enormous amounts of data have been gathered about large numbers of patients in some pathologies (e.g. cancer), yet every patient is individual and global models treating them all the same are unlikely to be effective.
The challenge is to stratify the patients along homogeneous groups, transferring shared information between groups yet capturing the individuallities of each group. In this talk I will review some recent efforts that pursue such a transfer learning approach through hierarchical models, and I will illustrate some applications in the fields of single-cell biology and precision medicine.
